In September 1945, Sam Walton purchased a franchise in Newport, Arkansas, which was part of a regional retailer chain. This acquisition was a great success given that Walton increased annual sales from $80,000 USD to $225,000 USD in 1948. However, the lease was not renewed and at the end of 1950, Walton was forced to relocate. On May 9, 1950, Walton bought a store in Bentonville, Arkansas, and opened Walton’s 5 & 10. Later, the town of Ozark Mountain, with 2900 citizens, became Wal-Mart’s future headquarters.
