Gazprom is a fully incorporated Russian company that extracts, treats and transports natural gas. Since 1954, Gazprom has been the largest gas exporter in the world and is a significant player on the global petrol market.
Gazprom was originally part of the Soviet Ministry of Oil and Gas Industry, and it was created in 1965. In 1989, the department was transformed into a state group called “Gazprom”, which then became a state stock corporation in 1993.
Following the fall of the USSR in 1991, the group lost a third of its’ pipelines and a quarter of its’ pumping stations, which became property of independent republics. In 2005, Gazprom announced the planned 2010 construction of a 1200 km pipeline under the Baltic Sea. The goal being to bypass Poland and the Ukraine to reduce transit costs as well as the eventual financial risks that Gazprom termed as “unsanctioned levies”.
Gazprom entered the FTSE (London Exchange), on January 1, 2006 and doubled its’ value in the two months following the Ukrainian crisis. International investors hold close to 20% of its’ capital, the Russian state holds 50% (plus one stock) and the remainder is shared by Russian and foreign investors.
The company became the third largest in world market capitalization behind ExxonMobil and PetroChina, and is the first Russian and European company in market capitalization in 2007. Following the financial crisis at the end of 2008, Gazprom’s market capitalization fell by 76%, downgrading the company to the 35th rank in the world. By 2012, it had returned to a rank of 15th. Nonetheless, Gazprom’s debt stands at $49 Billion.
Currently, Gazprom has the largest network of pipelines in the world, with 150,000 km, and is involved in banking, insurance, media, as well as in the construction and agricultural sectors.
